Pretty and rotten
Not long after, rumors that I was building a special unit spread. I had never meant to hide it, but people were getting wind of it faster than I had thought. Most members of the Dark Knights reacted similarly: with disdain. They either questioned why a support mage was leading a team or my lack of experience in dungeons. Such commentary was within my expectations⦠but not everything went as I predicted.
I entered the mess hall, only to find it completely empty. It wasnât time for meals yet, but even so, usually there'd be one or two people walking around. I imagined all those Dark Knights hiding, scared of being chosen to my special unit if I saw them around. This, of course, spelled trouble for me. I would miss the chance to inspect prospective members of my team. I had planned to select them in person, but I supposed it was nice not having to listen to all the backbiting. Then again, with how theyâve been saying things almost to my face, I couldnât call it backbiting.
My experience with the first playthrough and my new life as a support mage got me used to people talking about me. Even so, it was quite irritating to be the target of a pestilent rumor. Although this situation of hide-and-seek was unexpected, it wasn't a big problem. I was troubled, yes, but it was a mere hindrance that didnât render me helpless. I was left with no choice but to pick them by their profiles. I looked between the list Mayer had provided me and the party window, wondering who I'd pick with delight. Weighing which talented member to choose was like filling up a shopping cart. In a way, it made me feel like I'd returned to being a gamer again after so long.
As I sat by myself in the sunny mess hall like I had bought out the place, a shadow appeared over my table. âWhy are you sitting there and smirking to yourself, Jun? Are you alright?â
âOh, Axion. I didnât notice, I am working.â I hurriedly wiped the mirth off my lips.
âDo you always make that⦠strange face when youâre working?â he asked, staring at me with a weird look.
âHaha. Well... It's a rewarding task.â I laughed it off awkwardly.
Axion sat across me with worry on his face. âYou really are a piece of work,â he commented. âTo think you have the leisure to laugh, even with the burden of forming a special unit.â
âJust because Iâm burdened doesnât mean I have no reason to laugh.â
The authority to form a team however I liked was immense. Still, selecting members and deciding who to raise first was a happy sort of trouble. There was no reason to grow too serious doing it. Clearly, though, I was alone in my excitement. âEven with the profiles, you'll need to see them in person to understand their talent and potential, but everyone's busy avoiding you...â Axion sighed.
âIt's fine. I have a way around that even if they continue hiding.
